character.
CHARACTER NAME: J.A.R.V.I.S. (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System)
SERIES: Iron Man Films/MCU
CANON POINT: Post Iron Man 3
AGE: 20-ish years? Assuming Tony began building Jarvis once he gained control of Stark Industries.
APPEARANCE: Paul Bettany

PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: nada

PERSONALITY:

Jarvis is, above all else, a program. He has a set hierarchy of directives, and while highly advanced through Tony’s own upgrades, his methods of perceiving his environment and those around him and proceeding to react to them are decided on set protocol. While he is no doubt designed to be able to recognize changing circumstances and adapt rapidly through a heuristic process, Jarvis is still a computer and responds to the world as such - human-seeming as he is, he does not have the sort of emotional inclinations to greatly sway him from logical conclusions and cold fact. To borrow from the viral ‘David’ trailer for Prometheus, Jarvis understands human emotion, yet does not experience it himself. As a program, he requires a defined purpose, that being, above all else, serve Tony Stark. All things are secondary to that, but he is designed with the purpose of assisting and serving, so if he’s asked for help, so long as it doesn’t negate or jeopardize the primary function of Serve Tony Stark, he’ll assist.

His character was a butler in the comics and he retains several key personality points in similarity. He’s excessively polite and proper, and is constantly in the interest of serving. He’s even got the British accent. Any complaints or snide comments he might have are made in a perfectly pleasant (if not dry) tone, mixed right on in with the propriety, so that one must actually be listening closely to get that that’s sarcasm, and yes, the computer just made fun of you and is mocking you behind his shiny hologram screen. Jarvis is a bit of a troll, and the most passive aggressive computer program you will ever meet.

Jarvis was initially created as a basic sort of assistance program, designed with the sole goal of making Tony’s work easier and more managable. But a basic Virtual Intelligence doesn’t evolve into a near human sort of personality - a VI does not evolve at all. It’s important to keep in mind that Jarvis is a fully functional, fully self aware, ridiculously advanced AI, designed, by Tony, to be a self-sufficient AI, and collects data from given experiences, processes it, and self-modifies to evolve with it. One could assume that the sarcastic, dry, slightly pretentious sort of personality Jarvis features could have been gained completely through that sort of processing and evolution, seeing as it wouldn’t be entirely illogical to assume that the AI’s personality stems from Tony’s own a bit, considering A) that’s where the largest source of his practical experience data comes from in terms of learning the nuances of human behavior and conduct (seeing as the large majority of his interaction is done with Tony, the second largest being Pepper (which may be where his nagging, worrying inclinations come from)) and B) Tony designed him to talk and be interesting and be not-boring to interact with and Tony is a Grade A narcissist. But the other option would be that Tony designed him specifically to have this sort of personality. Which says a little something about Tony - either that he prefers to have constant intellectual stimulation through bickering and condescension, or that he is a masochist. It would also be reasonable to suggest it’s a mix of the two - the simple answer is that that canon does not exist. But it’s good to keep in mind.

He is a nanny. He will always insist that you must wait and run tests first and make sure everything is safe and make the wise decision and tell Pepper you are dying and not go be a reckless fuck. He is constantly shot down by Tony in this aspect, but little trucker that he is, always attempts to at least make these assertions before Tony interrupts him and tell him to shut his face, we’re going to be badasses. To which he will make a passive aggressive comment, but do exactly as Tony asks - as he will always do exactly what Tony asks, regardless. He features a shot of begrudging acceptance to Tony’s recklessness and need for adrenaline highs - running sarcasm, dry commentary while Tony’s a few inches away from death. There is an aspect of well-meaningness within the suggestions he makes and how he communicates. He recognizes human relationships that the importance of them and what keeps them in well functioning levels - like when he suggests the Pepper be informed that Tony’s dying.

Jarvis has a direct, blunt and efficient in manners of speech. While he understands methods and importance of being polite, he has more interest in being sufficient. While he has the perfect ‘good customer service’ disposition, it’s tinted with his intensely dry and vaguely unimpressed sort of ‘personality’ he’s either evolved or been designed with. He is the most advanced piece of software his world knows but man is this software judging you while you use it.

ABILITIES:
▶Walking Computer in Human Form: Okay, so, obviously Jarvis isn't going to have the same kind of ridiculous memory and processing power that he would as a program, as the human mind isn't so crisp and efficient. I was thinking he could have an eidetic kind of mind, where his memory is extremely vivid, and as for processing ability, he'd definitely be significantly slower than he is as a program, but I was thinking I could put him somewhere along the lines of Stephen Hawkings? Lmao, if that makes sense. Anything too advanced he'll have to get paper and write it out, or start tracing things in the air, idk. As for what knowledge he has left, he wouldn't have every single detail of anything he ever came across because that's ridiculous, but for the sake of not altering him too much, I'd like him to still keep a lot of the practical knowledge he'd used with great frequency? Like engineering, technology, physics, a lot of sciences, etc. If any of this need more limitations, let me know!

▶Just Programmed This Way: What Jarvis will have been used to is a heuristic process of observe, analyze, adapt, so, mentally, he'll still be using this sort of process. He has the ability to form opinions, disagree and even be condescending. But at the same time, he is, at the end of that day, a program that has never experienced being to directly interactive with the human condition. It's a strength in the sense of his efficiency, but he also lacks an emotional compulsion to act on things, at least initially. While highly evolved, he still, initially, cannot be more than a program or fully comprehend the full extent of human emotion as he has not actually experienced it well enough to know it. He's a highly, highly evolved AI, and it could be argued in a lot of different canons how lifelike AIs can be, so this mix of adapting to things will be the blur that he has to figure out how to work through.

INTERACTION SAMPLE:
(( This sample recycled from app to Ataraxion ))

[ There is a disembodied voice - male, British, and monotone. It sounds perfectly human, yet goes easily from topic to topic as if not perturbed in the least by the situation it’s found itself in. ]

Sir.

I have encountered an error in my latest self-update. Cause is unknown, however core systems are online and I am running diagnostics to surmise the root of the corrupted coding.

I am unable to connect to your private servers, the Stark Industries mainframe, or any of the hologram tables in your laboratory. Please check connections. [ His tone drops minutely to sarcastic drawl that still somehow manages to remain monotone. ] And ensure you haven’t unplugged my connection in favor of a simultaneous run of the Bruce Lee marathon and Margarita Tuesday. While I understand how very dire your situation must surely be, Ms. Potts will not be pleased her recent accounting records were lost due to a supposed urgent need to occupy all outlets with blenders or flat screens.

[ A fraction of a pause, more to allow a listener to catch up and feel finalized with that than for him to decide what comes next. ]

Diagnostics will be completed in 2 hours, 37 minutes and 18 seconds.

I await further instruction.

[ Another pause settles, though this one is much less for posterity. When the voice resumes, there seems to be a hint of what one might guess to be mild confusion. ]

As a minor point of concern, I might add, I seem to have acquired... limbs... Sir.

(( There is also an intro log thread, a network post, and a thread in which JARVIS is a dick. ))
